New Poster: “Want to Live Where the Free Market is Totally Unfettered? Move to Somalia.”

In this election year, we are hearing much rhetoric from the right wing in support of  abolishing “job-killing regulations.” Of course, there is a current example of what a completely “free” market looks like: Somalia, the ugliest, saddest, most unsafe place on Earth, where the people are at the complete mercy of the local thugs. Is that what we want America to look like?

New Poster: “I Know I’ve Been Blessed.”

In the midst of all the political hurly-burly of our lives, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are to be Americans. A homeless person in America today has ready access to better medical care than the King of England (at that time the most powerful person in the world) did only a hundred years ago.

If a policeman pulls you over, he’s not stopping you to extort money from you. If you criticize the President, you are not going to be snatched off your front sidewalk by a group of non-uniformed men, and then taken to a prison cell where you will be tortured for months or years. And your taxes are not a crushing burden that will keep you forever mired in poverty while aristocrats play polo with your withered heart.

If you are living in America today, you are one of the luckiest people who has ever lived. Truly, we are blessed.

I don’t mind a (tiny) portion of my taxes going to help the poor. What doesn’t seem fair is for me to pay taxes while a wealthy behemoth like General Electric gets away with paying no taxes at all, as they famously did in 2009. As Leona Helmsley once said, “Taxes are for the little people.” Is that the way we want America to be?

New “Dollar Bill Protest” is Gaining Momentum

These bills are showing up everywhere now. And the amazing thing is, the statement above is true. You may recall the recent public discussion about which large corporations have paid no taxes in recent years, largely because of loopholes put in place by Republican legislators. For example, General Electric paid no taxes at all in 2009. Not a small amount. Not a low rate. They literally did not pay a dollar.

This is the sort of protest that one can engage in from the comfort of one’s own home, with a glass of ice tea at one’s elbow. Of course, defacing money is a crime, so PoliticalLoudmouth would never sanction such a thing. Sugar and lemon for you?

New Talking Points: “Labor Peace is a Crazy Liberal Idea”

A new guest post by Dr. William Turner. Visit his web site

Everyone’s favorite new, “libertarian” United States Senator, Rand Paul, has taken to distributing a petition in support of his “Right to Work Act,” stating, inter alia, that “This forced unionism breeds violent strikes.”  With this statement, Paul demonstrates nothing but his profound ignorance of U.S. history.

New Poll: Americans blame Bush for bad economy by a wide margin

It’s good to see that Americans can see causes and effects, and we’re not the flatworms that Fox News and the Republican Party often take us for. A new poll by Quinnipiac University indicates that 54 percent of Americans think Bush is to blame for exploding the federal deficit and swelling unemployment, whereas just 27 percent believe it is President Obama’s fault.

Those figures are bad news for Republicans, who are hoping to use the nation’s poor economic state as a key issue in 2012.

New Poster: “Gaia Say Fight: You Are Our Secret Weapon Against The War on Women”

The recent War on Women waged by the American Trailer Park Patriarchs Party is, of course, just the most recent skirmish in a virulent campaign that has being going on at least since a certain Bronze Age thug/goatherd first intoned, “Look, it’s Yahweh or the highway.”

Now, the planet herself is waking and says to you, “Rise up, my children. I am with you. I will strengthen your arm. Strike a blow for freedom. Yours…and mine.”

New Posters: “Come On, Brothers! Join The Fight Against the War on Women.”

Hey, brothers! Our sisters need us! The right wing radicals in America have launched a concerted attack on women’s rights. In the US House of Representatives and state houses across the nation, Republicans have initiated and are passing an astonishing array of bills that will strip women of their reproductive rights. From victims being forced to prove that they were raped to the IRS, to state bills like the recent Missouri bill that mandates a 7 year prison sentence for doctors who perform an abortion on a “viable” fetus, the attacks are coming from all directions. Time to man up! Let’s go, bros!

New Essay: “Egalitarianism Was a Crazy Liberal Idea”

In last few decades, American conservatives have worked hard to put about the idea that liberals are elitists. To a surprising degree, they have been successful, at least with some portions of the population. How did this happen? And where did idea that we should treat our fellow citizens equally really come from?

Find out in this brisk and brief essay by guest blogger and legal historian Dr. William Turner.

US Supreme Court Sides With Convicted Rapist Against a Teen-Aged Girl

A teen-aged cheerleader in Texas refused to cheer for a player who was convicted of raping her. (He had received a light sentence from the court, and was still  allowed to play for the school.) The school dismissed her from the cheer leading squad, so she sued. She lost.

The high school has come up with a figure of $45,000 in “damages” that she owes. And now the US Supreme Court has refused to hear the case, giving its stamp of approval to the rapist and the high school that have caused such flagrant harm to this girl.

This story is difficult to believe. Here are the phone numbers and email addresses of the school officials involved, in case you would like to call and ask for clarification on this story:

Richard Bain Jr., Supt., Silsbee School , rbain@silsbeeisd.org, (409) 980-7800

Eldon Franco, Principal, Silsbee High School, efranco@silsbeeisd.org; (409) 980-7800, ext. 6030.

The fax is 409-980-7897.

Talking Points: Anti-Monopoly Laws Were a Crazy Liberal Idea

You may have seen our poster series on the “crazy liberal ideas” that have formed the America we love today. Now, this brisk essay by legal historian Dr. William Turner shows how anti-monopoly laws were a crazy liberal idea when they were first put in place, and how they remain a powerful and much-needed crazy liberal idea today. IRS Abortion Audits Gaining Support in US Congress

If H.R. 3 becomes law, IRS agents conducting audits on women would have to figure out if they had ever used any tax credit or benefit to pay for an abortion. And if a woman had used any kind of tax benefit or credit to pay for an abortion, she would have to provide documentation that she was the victim of rape or incest, or that the termination was necessary to save her life.  This measure now has 221 co-sponsors.
